With the new football season finally underway, footie fans will have plenty to argue about – Was that player offside? Was that the best Rooney goal – ever? Was the referee’s decision right? You know the sort of thing.
But it seems US Courier Company DHL has already got people talking. On 22nd August DHL revealed it will be sponsoring the domestic training kit of premier league champions Manchester United for the next four years in a deal worth £40 million.
To give you an idea of the scale of this deal, the Guardian newspaper reported this “exceeds the value of all but five main shirt sponsors in the Premier League”.
The sponsorship will see DHL’s logo being worn by the first team, reserves and youth players as they train for domestic fixtures.
What’s more this is history in the making because according to The Sunday Times this is the first time a club has secured separate sponsorship for its training kit (Manchester United’s club shirts will continue to be sponsored by the financial company AON).
Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill said on the official club website “this deal breaks new ground in the English game. DHL’s global presence and international standing are a perfect fit for the world’s most popular football club”.
Marketing Magazine explain how DHL is already Manchester United’s official logistics partner. The magazine reported that DHL is responsible for the “distribution of United’s range of merchandise, including match programmes and shirts, across the world. In return, DHL is able to conduct a range of consumer marketing and B2B marketing activities across a number of United platforms. These include digital advertising on perimeter boards, match day programmes, branding on the club website, and at events hosted at the club’s Old Trafford stadium”.
As Manchester United is a world football club this level of brand awareness is clearly good news for DHL.
